B4BC - Boarding for Breast Cancer

Monica's Story

"for moni"

by christine thomas

gliding down the mountain
soaring thru the air
the snow it falls so steady
its sprinkled in her hair

a young and vibrant woman
slowly lost her strength
it seems to me inpossible
it seems so to this day

to have such grace and beauty
inside as well as out
was such an inspiration
and now i am without

we used to laugh
and then we'd sing
we talked about most everything
but deep inside i think she knew knew
that she would sadly be leaving soon

keep in touch her mama said
she always laughed at that
she traveled alll around the world
she wanted to come back

and all around they mourn her
at home and on tv
they set up big fundraisers
and spoke of her fondly

but now shes with the angels
thats where she does belong
it seems selfish to want her back
but shes gone and that seems wrong
you know it seems to me so wrong

to have such grace and beauty
inside as well as out
was such an inspiration
and now i am without
and now we are without

The inspiration for Boarding For Breast Cancer was a young woman named Monica Steward. Monica, who was a very dear friend of all B4BC founders, started her battle with breast cancer at the age of 26 and passed two years later from complications rising from the disease.

"Boarding for Breast Cancer" was founded as a result of Monica voicing her frustration with the lack of awareness for young women about the disease to friends and future co-founders, Tina Basich, Shannon Dunn, Lisa Hudson and Kathleen Gasperini. Their idea was to create an event that centered around their mutual passions, snowboarding and music, to communicate the message of awareness, raise money for research and educate young women about breast cancer.

Monica Steward passed away a month later-just three months before her inaugural Boarding for Breast Cancer Snowboard + Music Festival event.
