Health Tip

April - 2009
A Healthier World = A Healthier You!

Spring has sprung and everything is getting a little greener, why don't you?

This month B4BC wants to share things you can do to improve the world around you. If you’ve looked at our “7 Steps to Stomp Out Breast Cancer” on our website then you’ve seen that one way you can reduce the risk of breast cancer is to live green, because a healthier earth equals a healthier you.

Harmful chemicals in our environment, such as BPA in some plastic bottles and other household products and benzene, one of many toxic compounds found in automobile exhaust, have been found to be connected to the development of breast cancer. Take a more active role in the world around you to increase your odds against breast cancer and other diseases.

One way you can do your part to make the world a little healthier and a little greener is to alter your transportation, even if it’s just once a week. Try taking the bus, riding a bike or walk! Not only is it better for you, it’s better for everyone around you.

If you are driving your car here are a few things you can do to make that drive a little greener:
  • Properly inflate your tires. Properly inflated tires is an easy way to save a lot of gas, and a lot of money too! Having low tire pressure makes the engine work harder causing the engine to burn gas more quickly, which affects your car’s gas mileage. Visit planetgreen.com to learn more about this simple eco-friendly tip.
  • Take the junk out of your trunk. Fuel efficiency can be reduced by up to two percent when you drive around with an extra 100 pounds in the trunk of your car. The extra weight requires extra power and extra fuel being burned by your engine.
  • Remove your roof rack. Roof racks create aerodynamic drag and put unnecessary weight on a vehicle, both of which decrease your car’s fuel efficiency.

Conserving energy is another simple way to go green. It’s as easy as turning off that light when you leave the room or changing your light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs. Tips on affordable and energy efficient light bulbs, as well as an entire green buying guide are available at thegreenguide.com.

Get an electric car or hybrid,
Get a diesel car and run it on sustainable fuel.
